SEO Tips: How to Organize your Site for Fast Ranking

In my last keyword building article I wrote about how to select keywords that would generate the highest return with the least amount of work.

I demonstrated how employing advanced search strings and recording Overture data can be used to find keywords with very little competition and high search volumes. My conclusion was that by conducting keyword research in this manner, ranking for keywords becomes easier.

The next step in Keyword Building is learning how to organize a site around a keyword list for fast ranking and best results. The following is my strategy for doing so.

What You’ll Need

  • A finalized list of keywords as well as their corresponding search volumes and number of competitors.
  • Excel, or some other spreadsheet program.
  • An understanding of the site’s industry, and which terms are semantically related.
  • Enough SEO knowledge to decide which words from your list are “low competition.”

Low Competition Keywords

“Low competition” is a relative term. To illustrate why, search the term “Marietta, Georgia real estate” in Google. Here are the key numbers:

  • 99 inachor and intitle competitors for the term
  • 1,300 searches for the term each month
  • 330.8 average backlinks for a top 10 result
  • 4.2 average page rank of a top 10 result

Now here are some seemingly perplexing numbers regarding the 9th result:

  • It has only 8 backlinks
  • It also has a PR of 0

Meanwhile the 10th result has…

  • 240 backlinks
  • PR of 3

This raises the question of why the 10th result doesn’t rank higher than the 9th result, as well as why the 9th result is even on the first page. The answer is two-fold:

  • The 9th result is a sub-page optimized singularly for that search term.
  • The 9th result’s domain has roughly 1.1 million more backlinks than any other site on the SERP and is a subdomain of Yahoo.com.

For Yahoo, a term with 99 competitors and 1,300 searches every month is very “low competition.” However, because it has optimized a page for the search term, and is well trusted by Google, it easily ranks.

When organizing your keywords, picking out the “low competition” words is an integral part to driving traffic. Devote a page to every word that will easily rank from your list, optimizing the title tag, h1 tag and keyword density.

Remember, just as you look to Yahoo, thinking, “I wish I could rank for a word like that without having to link-build” so too will a site smaller than yours say of your “low competition” keyword pages.

High Competition Keywords

Keywords that will require a link-building strategy before ranking are considered “high competition.” High competition keywords should be broken down into semantically similar groups. Intuition is largely used to separate the keywords, but here are a few universal guidelines:

  • Keep the groups under 6 words each.
  • Group phrases together with more than one word in common.
  • Check to see if two keywords return similar results in Google.
  • No group should have only 1 keyword. Maximize the efforts of your link building.

Once the keywords have been semantically split, prepare an optimized title tag containing all of the keywords from that group. Also choose one word from each group which is the most important to get ranking. That term should be what is in the anchor text of your links when you begin a link building campaign.

Overall, this strategy will save you hours of fiddling and tweaking. Remember, SEO is no different than any other business process – it requires a plan. Practice these tips and you will see success.

Free SEO Course – Suggestions?

I’ve recently started my first website and am keen on learning about SEO, but don’t know where to start. I’ve looked on various forum and websites, but they are all rather complex (and make many assumptions).

Can anyone recommend a good free SEO course that can outline the basics and get me started?

Hi,

Seomoz is a good resource, as is search engine land.

Basically SEO is about attaining a ranking in the search engines. One of the ways (emphasis on the ONE), is to generate one way inbound links, which I detail below:

Try to steer clear of back link exchange sites and reciprocal links. These will just take up your time and don’t offer a great deal of value unless you can get a reciprocal link from a high page rank authority site that is.

What you are looking for is one way links, that’s links from one site pointing to your own site. Think of a link as a vote, the more votes you generate the better your chances of rising up the search engines results. It’s not all about the number of links though, generating quality, relevant links is key.

Moving on from this, try to generate this type of link from a site with at least a page rank of two. You can easily tell the page rank of a site by downloading the page rank tool bar, available on most search engines.

Methods:

Try researching your competitors. Use Link diagnosis or Yahoo site explorer. Tyr to generate links from sites pointing to your competitors sites.

Blog posts. Find relevant blogs, read the posts and comments and join in the conversation by adding something interesting, leave your thoughts, offer help, and leave a link pointing to your site with your key words as the anchor text.

Article submission: Write articles on your subject, post to article directories – leaving your link in the resource box.

Free directory submission. Generate a list of free web directories; submit your site for a free link.

Dmoz: Although not as powerful as it once was, submit your site to the open directory project.

Forums. Can be time consuming as you really need to become ‘part of the community’ before being able to generate a link, but well worth the effort.

These are just a few of the ‘free’ methods. Keep doing your research and remember it takes time and consistent effort.

Happy link hunting!

SEO Basics – Starting With Search Engine Optimization Basics

by Bruce Clay, Inc

SEO basics start with the composition of the words on your pages and what intrinsic value they offer your audience. The first prerequisite of SEO is understanding the basic correlation of content composition and the impact that content has on rankings respecitively.

Relevance is the underlying criteria that search engines reward, if your content is specific, informative and manages to acquire click through traffic, then your pages have the trappings of becoming popular which is a component to acquiring a top 10 ranking.

Aside from the title tag, (the main tag you use to describe the content of the page) and the links that endorse your content through back links (links from other sites)and the copy (which is completely under your control). There are fundamental guidelines you can adhere to that will assist you in keeping your content on topic to elevate topical relevance.

What are Search Engines?

Search engines are a cataloging system that are essentially transparent in their composition. Search engines are expected to glean information and organize data from thousands of unique industries, compile that data and then, based on the fetch command you issue as a result of you entering a boolean query in the search box are then expected to retrieve the most relevant result.

Understanding the premise of how search engines function rather than struggling to adapt and muscle your way up the SERPs (search engine result pages) is far easier instead.

Through appeasing the laws of their construction (the mathematical algorithm, teamed up with it’s ability to gain contextual artificial intelligence like phrase rank algorithm, search engines have the ability interpret the context of your pages.

Your focal point is simply to provide the ideal (relevant) result according to their ranking criteria. Which falls into three categories.

These three measuring sticks search engines use to assess content in addition to semantic synonyms and related phrases are called allinanchor, allintitle and allintext.

Talk about green widgets enough on your page, they know your page is about green widgets (allintext), placing it in the title is also a great way to signal the plane (allintitle) or get enough links from other pages that say your site is about green widgets and even if it is or not, it can potentially rank for that or related phrases (allinanchor).

That in a nutshell is how SEO basics play out according the the search engine spiders (the little programs that scour the web looking for new or exciting information to report back to the index).

The next part of SEO basics will cover how to ensure that your content is spider friendly or how to invite search engine spiders to skim, index and rank your content.

In closing, the gist is (1) make your titles unique (2) keep your writing style focused and use key words (words containing the phrases you want to rank for) as well as develop as many on topic links from other sites to cement your position in the search engine result pages.

Just writing about it on your site is not enough, unless you sites has hundreds of thousands of strong links pointing at in, in which case it can rank on the title tag alone. That is called website authority and is yet another topic we will be covering in the future.

The most relevant search result is the one that makes it to the top 10. There are no secrets involved, just logical relevance, but popularity counts so don’t just write dry content.

The whole exercise of SEO is to get traffic from people. Since people pay the bills and not spiders, make sure you have something worth saying and they will take notice and pass it along.

Otherwise, you are only helping your competition by leaving your guests hungry or thirsty for more topical information about your subject. In which case, they will simply return to the search engine and click the next result in the list. So, the bottom line is user engagement aside from topical relevance and traffic.

On Site SEO: If you don’t do this Your Competitors will Outrank you!

Whenever people think about driving traffic to a website the next thing that usually comes to mind is back links. This is very important, not only because search engines and web directories place great importance on it, but also because they are sources of direct traffic to your site. However, concentrating on building back links alone will not make you to outrank your competitors, you have to also do what is called on site SEO.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and it involves optimizing your webpages so that they rank high for specific keywords in your niche. When you build back links you are doing off site SEO, but when you tweak your page to make it search-engine friendly, you are doing on site SEO. Neglecting the later can compromise your search engine ranking.

If you ignore on site SEO your competitors will outrank you. Now you’ve known the importance of this, let’s now see how you can really do it.

Meta tags

We are going to focus on only two meta elements: the meta keywords and meta description. They appear within the head tag of your document. These tags once helped search engines to know what a page is all about but due to misuse, some search engines now neglect them, but they are still important.

The meta keyword goes like this:

And the meta description:

Title and Header Tags

Many people misuse the title and header tags. Search engines pay special attention to these tags. The title tag should contain a description of what a page is all about and this description should also contain your primary keywords.

The header tags range from h1 to h6 with h1 being the largest. This tags help search engines to understand the hierarchy of your site and they also place importance on keywords between these tags. So use your keywords between the heading tags.

Some people avoid using the heading tags because of their very large font-sizes. This would not be a problem if you know your CSS. You can quickly overcome this by using relative sizing. Set the body font-size to 1em and size other elements relative to that. You can give the h1 a font-size of 1.1em, h3 a font-size of .8em, h6 a font-size of .9em and so on.

Keyword Location

The location of your keywords is also important in SEO. Always place your primary keywords in the first paragraph of your content. Search engines will place more importance on keywords at such location.

Anchor text

Don’t link to different pages in your site with words like click here or get it here. Use your keywords in anchor text so that you can rank high in search engines for those keywords. This rule also applies when you’re building back links.

If one of your keywords is dog training tutorials, here is a good example of a sentence that contains the keyword anchor text:

We have several dog training tutorials that would help you turn your dog from a deaf and foolish pet to an obedient one.

Sitemap

Sitemap is a page that contains links to all the pages in your site. Sitemap helps search engines to crawl every page in your site. It also help your visitors to see the overall structure of your website.

Sitemap can increase your page rank because search engines take internal linking into account. The more pages search engines see in your website, the higher your page rank.

You can easily create a sitemap using free services like xml-sitemaps.com. How to do it is very straight forward. It is as simple as entering your main website URL and clicking on a button. After creating the site map, save and upload it to your root folder (http_docs or public_html).

Submit your sitemap to Google if you have a Google webmaster account. If you don’t have one get it at www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview. Always remember to create a new sitemap and submit to Google whenever you update your site.

These simple on site optimization tips can go a long way to boost your website ranking.

Free Report bit.ly – These two elements are called ‘on site SEO’ and ‘off site SEO‘. On-Site SEO involves manually optimizing every page on your website, from its title tag, keywords used within content to the way that your site map or overall structure is created. All of the work of on-site Seo takes place directly on your website, and is in your full control. With off-site SEO, you are focusing on building solid back links to your website, as the more incoming links to your site from quality, relevant websites, the more authority your website is given in the search engines. Building quality backlinks campaigns isn’t difficult, but it can take some time. Still, it’s a critical part of the SEO puzzle and a vital component in boosting your website ranking and maintaining your position. When it comes to on-site SEO, there are very important factors regarding the actual structure and anatomy of your website that you need to pay special attention to in order to effectively optimize your website for top search engine rankings.

SEO optimization on-site errors

After reviewing the SEO techniques on the site, novices tend to abuse their SEO. There is no such thing as too many good things in SEO. After having used the website SEO techniques, it is a good idea to be careful not to walk the fine line between good SEO and exaggeration. Some of the most common SEO mistakes on the site are happy with the stuffing of keywords, creating content to target keywords that are not fully adapted to the market, and with too many internal links.

Focus on providing the optimum solution for the user
Web
First and foremost, your goal should be to create a website that is easy to use, informative and useful. The mistake that many of these new SEO to do is just focus on improving the ranking of a page about on-site SEO. SEO excessive space can actually lead to a site penalized by search engines. In addition, the website is confusing and difficult to navigate meaningful content will not be as successful as the human visitors. On the other hand, if you provide site visitors with value, are more likely to link to your website and improve search engine ranking is much more in the long term. You can get immediate benefits of keyword stuffing and overuse of SEO techniques on the spot, but ended up losing, because it will obviously both search engines and site visitors.

On site optimization is beneficial but should not these techniques overboard. Make sure your site look natural. The principle can track your website to see someone who has no idea of referencing and see what you think. If this person thinks that you are horribly using a specific keyword or sounds unnatural in any way to integrate the site listed.

If you use too many internal links with anchor text containing your targeted keywords on your website, you can see that the ranking of search engines is decreasing rather than improving. Avoid excessive use of this tactic, ensuring that the links within the site are very natural. We’ve all seen sites that shoe full of internal links with anchor text containing your targeted keywords. This solution is not natural and does not provide a user-friendly experience and should be avoided at all costs. If an internal link refers to the page content, by all means drop the link, but otherwise it is better to put links to sites that are really important.

Another common mistake is to develop a natural substance. For example, if you sell t-Georgetown in Washington, he should not have side targeting the keyword “carpet in Takoma Park.” Takoma Park is located near Washington, but not in Washington. Make that you provide only content that is very important for the market or off potential customers. In this case, the focus should be on Washington DC or, better yet, a Washington neighborhood where your business is located in the carpet.

Keyword stuffing content widely keyword stuffing the title tag. If you sell window treatments in New York did not use the word “veil” repeatedly in your copy, because not only do they seem quite useless for users, search engines account and punished for it. Keep your content is to use keywords as natural as possible for optimal results.

In summary, focus on your site easy to use for users before anything else. SEO techniques on the site are useful, but only to a certain extent. Your main objective should be to attract links to your site visitors with great content. For best results, avoid over-optimization of your site and focus instead on the content of tourist information. Use SEO techniques on the website of your site naturally more attractive to people and to avoid punishment by search engines.

SEO: Backlinks (RQR Basics)

http://RichQuickReview.com/

This video covers some basic information about one of the most important search engine optimization practices: link-building.

I go through the three factors that matter when it comes to backlinks:
1. The amount of backlinks
2. The value of those backlinks
3. And the anchor text of the backlinks

Each of these factors plays an important part in how Google determines where to rank your website in the search results. One of the problems with link building, is that any link you create yourself is less valuable than a link created by someone else. Obviously, someone else endorsing your website with link is better than you endorsing your own website with a link. Search engine spiders can sometimes determine whether link was built by you or not, but not always.
They do pay attention to whether a link profile looks natural or not. So, if you are just using a link spamming bot that creates identical looking backlinks in identical looking places, the search engines will notice this and de-value of those links.

Additionally to the number of backlinks, the value of those backlinks and the anchor text of the backlinks, a certain amount of ranomization is very important to make your link profile look natural.

SEO On A Dime

Seo for those with small budgets will take some time and should be a long term effort, but the benefits are many. If you don’t have the cash to manage using a service or one of the alleged experts, don’t worry. You can do this!

And even if you could afford an expert, you should know some basics. Otherwise it’s like hiring and accountant and not being able to add. You need some SEO knowledge even if you are outsourcing the job, to know how to shop for an expert, and what to look for and expect in a service.

SEO for your pages

Begin your SEO with your home page. Give it a worthy name. No, welcome will not do. What does that say about your page. Welcome is plastered on pages all over the internet and doesn’t do a thing for setting your page apart for many many others.

Give your home page, and all the pages of your site a worthy title based on your keywords. Get your page started off right by telling search engines and visitors right upfront what your site is about. The SEO benefits will be far reaching!

The same goes for your domain name. Whatever your site is focused on, find the best keyword and get it into your domain name. This may take a little work. You will find many names you want are taken. Don’t despair. Get your grey cells working, rearrange words, seperate with hyphens, do whatever is necessary, but find a way. This will further optimize your website and when links come in from just your site name think of the SEO benefits you will be getting with no further effort on your part.

Meta tags are being pooh-poohed these days, but put them in anyway. Yes some of the search engines will not read them, but others will and since search engine traffic is targeted to you keywords don’t turn down traffic even in small numbers. Small numbers interested in what you have to offer, beat large numbers that land on your site accidentally or with no interest.

Another advantage to good meta tags is that they are used by a lot of directories. You will find that when submitting to a number of directories they will automatically pick up and use the description you have entered in your meta tags.

Good website navigation and sitemaps are another way to further your on page SEO. Add both an html sitemap and a google sitemap. If your sites gets very large this could be of great benefit in helping the bots find all of your pages.

Simple, easy to understand navigation and inter-linking between pages is just sensible in helping visitors get around your site and the inter-linking will help out with backlinks.

Good original content is very important to SEO. Search engines look for original content and value it more than duplicate content. Make sure your site contains a large percentage of original content, and the more content and pages the better. Add pages on a regular basis, and update pages occasionally to keep the spiders coming back.

SEO off page

SEO on page is the foundation, and you need it, but off page SEO is even more important.

You must get links. You can begin your off page SEO with two way link which are easier to get. Two way links are easier, and they have less value, but they are a starting place and a piece of your optimization strategy.

Look for sites that add something to your website, and give value to your visitors. You don’t want to link to direct competition, but related resources. Check each site first and be sure it is a good website, has link pages that are categorized with a small number of related links per page. Avoid link farms that have hundreds of unrelated and uncategorized links on a single page, and sites that are totally unrelated to yours. These will take away from your SEO and could even do harm.

Submit to directories. You will find many directories that are free and will not require that you link back.

Write articles. This is one of the best SEO values on the internet right now. If you write and submit articles yourself, this can be done completely for free. As you budget has more room, you can automate this process. In the meantime, frequent article submissions will bring you lots of incoming links.

Write a good bio box in the third person. Include anchor text that points visitors and links to different pages on your site. This is one way you can use SEO and direct links and traffic where you want. Put some time into writing bio boxes. This is time well spent.

Forums, blogs, email signatures, and social bookmarking are other off page SEO methods that will enhance your SEO efforts and you should educate yourself on all of them.

Circulating free viral reports is another SEO method that can be accomplished free or for little cost and bring big rewards. There are many more methods of off page SEO that you can use and tweak to get better results. Always consider if there is a new way you can twist and old method to get better SEO results.
