Seven Tips for Search Engine Optimization

When you are looking to boost traffic to your website, you need to search engine optimize – or SEO in abbreviation – it. In order to do that you have to understand the basics of SEO and how to use it to make sure your website is found by the people you want to see it. SEO allows search engines, spiders, crawlers, and other search methods to hit upon your website every time. Here we have collected seven SEO tips we think you can use towards achieving this goal and making your website come out as the cream of the crop and not on the bottom of the web searching food chain. Be forewarned: these SEO tips will take some time and effort to put into effect on your website, but they are well worth it and will keep you from losing visitors because they can’t find you.

SEO Tips #1: Make sure that your website is designed to be search engine friendly.

How do you do that? Actually, it’s pretty easy. Use as much text in your website as possible as most search engines search on keywords. Pictures are great, but keep them to a relevant minimum. If you use things such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) or JavaScript, do not include it with your HTML coding. Instead keep it in a separate file so that the web search engines look through your text first. Research the pros and cons of tables as compared to frames and use the one that is right for you, and try to steer clear of non-HTML file types such as Adobe PDF and Microsoft Word documents.

SEO Tips #2: Use keywords in your text that the search engine will hit upon.

By using the right keywords in your website text you should get some outstanding results when someone searches for your site. The key to search engine optimization is getting your website to the number one spot when the search results are displayed. Use words that describe what your website is about and words that you think other people would use to search for the information you are presenting. Take your time and if you have to, take a look at other websites and see what keywords they are using to score the results they are getting.

SEO Tips #3: Review the information on your page such as headings to see if it is helping or hindering your page rankings.

This particular SEO tip should be done every few months. The information in your page title and header should include not only the description of your website, but also a keyword or two so that the search engines hit on it immediately.

SEO Tips #4: Add META tags and META description tags to all of your pages.

When you use a search engine to find a website, it usually returns a small paragraph telling you what the website is about. This is the META and META description tags. By using keywords in these and including them on all of your web pages – remember, if properly done the search engine will go to one of your web pages as compared to the homepage – you will be able to quickly and efficiently tell the search engine and the visitor what you are all about. This is a very important SEO tip that should not be ignored.

SEO Tips #5: Utilize link popularity. A trick used by Google, link popularity is used to rank your search engine.

This is done by the search engine seeking out all of the other websites and pages that are linked to your website. The more sites that carry a link to you, the better.

SEO Tips #6: List your site with Google’s Open Directory Project for more recognition.

Google is partial to websites that are listed in the Open Directory Project, so do your best to get your website listed in there.

SEO Tips #7: Use ALL of the above tips in conjunction with one another.

By using all of the above SEO tips together when you are building or tweaking your website, you should notice an almost immediate difference in your website page rankings. You may have to tweak your website a few times to accomplish your goal, but it will be worth the effort in the long run.

Increase Traffic to your Website – the Basics

There are plenty of ways to bring traffic to your website. Some are free and some cost money. A few can cost a lot of money depending on the topic of your website.

Let’s start with the FREE ways to drive traffic to your website:

1. Directory traffic: This is traffic brought to your site because someone found you in a directory using a search engine, such as Google or Yahoo. There are plenty of smaller directories too. You should submit your site to as many directories as you can. There are some directories that charge money to be listed or for a premium place in their directory. I have not found that paying for these services brings in more traffic to my site, but others say it helps a lot. To bring in traffic from a search engine, you need to make your site search engine friendly. This is often referred to as SEO or search engine optimization. I have plenty of free tips and articles to help you with SEO for your site.

2. Banner exchange: You can make a banner for your website and exchange it with other sites. The easiest way to exchange is to join an exchange site. My favorite is LinkBuddies and they have been around awhile. They even have a free banner creator. There are more free banner creators on the web. The most common size is 468×80. For a link exchange through a service, you just put some html into your site where the banner will go and the banners from other websites in the exchange are loaded onto your page each time someone views it. Each time a banner is shown, you earn credit towards having your banner shown on other sites. At LinkBuddies, your banner is shown once for each two banners shown on your site. The nice thing is that you can put a banner on each page, so credits add up quickly. If you are just starting out and need some traffic quickly, you can additional credits, but this is not required. At LinkBuddies you get 500 free impressions of your banner when you sign up.

3. Forums: Join some forums related to the topic of your website, or other topics you are just really interested in. Post and respond to other posts. Answer some questions. Once you are actively participating in the forum, put a link to your site in your signature if it is allowed. Be sure to include it in your forum profile.

4. Blogs: Setting up a blog is free. Blog about your topic. Make comments in other blogs that are relevant to your topic. Make good contacts and exchange links between your blog and someone else’s.

5. Exchange text links: This can help with your search engine ranking as well as bring in some traffic. But don’t just exchange links with anyone out there. Exchange links with sites that will be of interest to the people who read your site. Links to relevant pages are always better than just a link to another site for the sake of having a link. Make sure that your links page is easily accessible from the main page of your site.

6. Email: Make sure to include a link to your site in your personal email signature.

7. Offline: Is your website part of your business? Put it on your business card, stationary, flyers, etc.

There are also paid methods of bringing in more traffic to your site:

1. PPC: Paid-per-click ads can be a quick way to bring in traffic. Popular programs are Google’s Adwords, Yahoo’s Search Marketing, MSN’s ad service and 7search. There are plenty of other programs too. The lesser know programs will probably cost you less money, but you will probably not get as much traffic either. The trick is to write a great ad that will make people want to click on it and combine it with low-cost keywords. If you are making money with the ads, then consider adding on some more expensive keywords. I don’t spend more than half of what I bring in on ads and this works well for me.

2. Paid traffic sites: You can pay to have somewhat targeted traffic driven to your site. If your site is new and does not contain Adsense ads yet (or a similar program) then this can be a way to spread the word quickly and inexpensively. Just be sure to read the terms of service for any affiliate program you join. Some specifically prohibit you from participating if you are using a paid traffic program to get a lot of traffic to your site.

3. PTR programs: Paid-to-read programs pay people to read emails. Basically, the program is acting as your affiliate. You pay them, they send out a great email and some of the people who read it will be interested, click on the link in the email and visit your site. Again, make sure that this is ok with any other program you may have running on your site.

How to Harness the Power of Web Directories: The Missing Link in Your SEO Strategy

So you want exposure on the Internet? Of course you do. You want to drive people to your site, because that’s the only way your online business can succeed. And the more eyes you can get to your page, the better off you are. It’s common sense.

You’ve probably already thought of Google, and rightfully so. It’s the top search engine, so you want to make sure you’re a part of it. You may have also done some search engine optimization, and tweaked your site in certain ways so that Google will index you better. That’s a good start, but it’s also where many people go wrong.

The search engine marketing community often discusses this faux pas: people become obsessed with ranking on Google, and forget that there’s so much more to the Internet, so many more places where you can be found. It’s back to common sense again: don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Here are some reasons why:

- People use multiple search engines.
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, 58% of the people who search on Google also use another search engine. The same is true for 70% of MSN searchers, and 71% of Yahoo searchers. If consumers are looking for information in several places, it only makes sense for you to be in as many of those places as you can.

- Google indexes your listing in other search engines.
Ironically, when you work to broaden your horizons beyond the Google universe, you’re also working to improve your chances of showing up on Google. That’s because when a major search engine indexes the Internet, it also indexes the content of other directories.

Here’ the best part: if you can get listed in a web directory that provides Google-friendly one-way-links (that is, links that connect directly to your URL), you are essentially acquiring a ‘vote’ to your site, and therefore improving your site’s authority in the eyes of Google.

There are thousands upon thousands of Internet directories where you can list your site. Some will charge for submission, and the price will vary, from as little a few dollars to as much as hundreds. Some will accept your site right away, and others will need to review it, to ensure the integrity of their database.

Common sense applies again here: the goal is to get listed in as many directories as you can, so you get maximum exposure. But web directory submission can be very time consuming, so you have to be selective to maximize your productivity. Here are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind:

- If the price seems too high, it’s probably not worth it. If you have a little money to invest, it’s a good idea to get into some of the paid inclusion directories. Pick and choose from some of the mid-level ones, and try to diversify your presence by picking some foreign directories, as well as some local ones. Some directories also offer special inclusion, where you pay a premium to get listed quicker. It’s definitely worth it if you’re looking to improve your traffic as quickly as possible.

- Before submitting to any web directory, check to make sure the directory is not banned by Google.

- Be prepared before you start submitting. Write a few descriptions for your website in different lengths (50 words, 100 words, 200 words), so you can just copy and paste when you’re submitting. This is guaranteed to save you a lot of time.

- If you don’t want to spend a lot of time searching for, picking and choosing directories, you can find a variety of resources that will show you some of the best directories to submit to.

- If you don’t have a lot of time to devote to this, don’t worry about doing it all in one shot. Take a few minutes every day to do one or two directory submissions, until you make it through your list.

Expedition of SEO From Invention Time Till Date

Search engine optimization earlier some years ago was in its primitive stage. As search engines were themselves not appropriately tuned so optimizing didn’t matter much. Websites formerly were ranked through tags usage and images put up on the web pages. Gone are the days when optimizing a website was simpler process and anyone can get away with top ranking easily. But now the entire scenario has changed leading to rules and regulations to be followed by websites, so no chance of fooling search engines by black hat SEO techniques.

It’s been decades since the invention of World Wide Web that SEO services are being used, maybe the form and approach was different. When search engines became junction for most of the sites to be found, search engine promotion has become a major hit with the website owners as well as developers. The whole concept and approach towards website optimization has become very technical and professional. SEO service providers are coming up with effective and practical search engine marketing techniques in order to lure in the maximum website traffic. You can say budget allotted to SEO services has been increased, but it gives maximum ROI if done correctly.

SEO can be cheap as well as costly depending on the service provider and your project. However emphasis should be on selecting SEO Company that can do justice to your project, keeping budget in consideration. Despite repeated announcements by search engines to practice ethical ways some consultants still use unethical ways thereby making your website blacklisted.

Several techniques can be used for SEO like HTML linking, link building, keyword selection, etc to accomplish perfect search engine positioning.

Participating in online discussion forums is lucrative platform for search engine optimization. Here you can put up your website URL or advertisement in the signature tag of every message you put up. If the content you post in these forums is interesting enough then chances of your URL being clicked by the browsers increases.

Submitting articles to ezine publishers and other article directories help in earning extra money and also give better exposure to your content and lots backlinks too. Link exchange and e-mail signature are another most important tools for search engine optimization.

Page rank is matter of concern for most of the website owners and optimizers. Lethal combination of backlinks and keywords/phrases usage in web content is the algorithm that determines on what position visitors are going to find your website in search results.

Top 5 SEO Myths

Because of the popularity of search engine optimization, several misconceptions have been made these past few years. Whether you are doing it yourself, or have availed of afforadable seo services of a professional seo company, you need to know these SEO myths so you can avoid them, hence allowing you to save your precious resources such as time and money.

1. All kinds of meta tags are important.
There has been an ongoing debate whether meta tags are still necessary. Research has shown that search engines still prefer content which have meta tags but many search engines no longer follow the description and keywords tag since most spammers use these. The title and heading tags are believed to be important since they tell the search engines what the content is all about.

2. Monthly submission to search engines.
Many seo san diego firms submit sites to search engines monthly. This is a waste of time since you can submit your site once and when it is listed, search engines can automatically trace you.

3. SEO is expensive.
Though there are a lot of seo optimization company website today which offers seo services, SEO can still be done by the website owner himself. In fact, it is considered as the most cost effective form on internet marketing and does not require the same amount of expenditure required by sponsored or banner advertising. When it comes to San Diego seo, you only need to pay for page set up and monitoring.

4. PPC is better than SEO.
This might be the case in several scenarios, but this is not true for all sites. What we’re sure is that PPC is not true for the long term since expenditures will definitely be higher than your profits if you use it solely to promote your site. A lot internet users rely on organic search because they seldom find sponsored ads relevant.

5. You need an in-house specialist.
This is true only if you have a giant corporation. Unfortunately, this is rarely the case and small businesses do not have the resources to hire an in-house seo specialist. Thankfully, there are a lot of san diego seo companies which offer affordable seo services.

An Overview | Search Engine Optimization SEO

Many people who are new to internet marketing think that search engine optimization is one solution to insufficient traffic. Search engine optimization – or SEO for short – is actually a package of multiple services that help drive traffic to web sites.

In a nutshell, SEO covers the following aspects: respect for search engines and their rules, design of a web site, various components of internet marketing (pay-per-click ads, promotions, blogs, newsletters, catalogs), article submission (fresh content is imperative), reciprocal links, keyword purchase, and if you’re selling a product or service on a large scale basis, your internet marketing should also have affiliates.

Other services that go under search engine optimization are web site design, payment facilities, e-mail campaigns and advertising banners.

Given these multiple services, you need a company that offers one-stop shopping. About 10 years ago, SEO companies focused on only a few core activities of internet marketing, obliging web site owners and retailers to contact different companies for web site design, advertising, and payment facilities. Today, successful SEO companies are offering complete packages, providing extra services that will make the e-commerce experience of a web site owner smoother and more efficient. In addition to web site design and domain registration, SEO companies also offer copywriting and article submission services; they realize that when surfers are looking to buy a particular product or service, they need to feel that they are buying from a company that knows their product and shares useful, practical information.

Search Engine Optimization: what it’s all about…

Instead of defining search engine optimization in an academic way which is rather limiting, we will mention some elements that constitute good SEO practice:

Using of appropriate keywords in individual web pages

Getting your site listed in the indexes and lists of search engines and directories

Creating web pages that search engines like Google and MSN can read and won’t penalize

Avoid search engine penalties by adhering to guidelines provided by major search engines.

Building pages that will attract more traffic

Monitoring how your web site is doing vs your competitors

Encouraging other web sites to link to your web site

Now someone might argue, “I know what I want to sell and know how to sell it, so why should I even bother about search engine optimization when I have a nice web site and a catalog that people can look at?”

This statement is an accurate reflection of a “newbie” in internet marketing. Just because one has a web site and a product to sell does not mean he will sell that product and start making money.

First he needs customers. Where does he get customers? Sure, his family and friends can help by announcing to their network of contacts that he has a web site. But there are millions of web sites vying for the same traffic. The reason SEO should be our # 1 concern is that we won’t be able to do any effective advertising online if there are no people. Second, search engines are the greatest single source of people – your potential customers.

SEO experts say that 50% of site visits come directly from search engines. Okay, it’s not 100% anymore, because people just type a URL these days or else find websites browsing, but 50% is still a significant number. If you want to grab a share of that 50%, you need to learn search engine optimization – or get a company to do it for you!

SEO Pricing

There are so many aspects of a web site that can decrease or boost your search engine rankings. Each web site is as unique as DNA and as such, will react differently to different marketing treatments.

What are these different factors that go into your SEO Pricing and your web site’s ranking? Here is a list of the most important aspects:

1.

The State of Your Site Prior to the Optimization – Your web site can have many different attributes that contribute to its ability to rank well or not so well. Your site’s PageRank for example, if your PR is a 0/10 or 1/10, it’s going to take a lot longer and a lot more work to get your site ranking well. If your site is poorly designed, contains frames or is written entirely in Flash, a lot of work will be required to redesign your site so that it is search engine friendly. If your site has very few incoming links, a fair amount of link development will have to be done in order for you to see the rankings and traffic you’re after. A web site that has been around for a while and developed its PageRank, has a search engine friendly design and obtains links on a frequent basis, will be able to reach top positions much faster than other sites, once an optimization campaign is under way.

2. The Keywords You Are Targeting – Somekeywords are less competitive than others. If you search Google for a keyword or keyword phrase, you’ll see at the top of the results how many web pages are listed in those results. That is the amount of web sites that are competing with yours to reach top page placement for that keyword or keyword phrase. For example, the keyword phrase “web design” has approximately 303 million web pages listed in the results, whereas if you search for my name in quotations, “courtney heard”, you will see that there are only 508 web pages listed in the results.

It is therefore, much easier to rank well for the keywords “courtney heard” than it is for web design. This is why you must choose keywords wisely. With tools such as wordtracker.com, you can find out approximately how many searches are performed for a given keyword or keyword phrase. The more competitive those keywords are, the higher the cost will be to optimize your web site and the longer the optimization will take.

3. The Size of Your Target Market – If your site is targeting a global market, it will take a lot more effort to reach the top ten search results than if your site is targeting a regional market. It also depends on what sort of market you’re targeting. If your site sells a product that only a small group of people will be interested in purchasing, your site will be optimized easier than if the product or service appealed to the global population. For instance, the keyword phrase “real estate” will require a lot more effort to reach top page placement for than “real estate canada” and even “real estate vancouver”.

4. Competitor Sites’ SEO Campaigns – You might find that once your optimization campaign is under way, your site jumps and slips and jumps and slips several times. This can be due to many things, but the one we’ll look at is your competitors’ sites SEO campaigns. If your competitors are aggressively optimizing their own sites for search engines, they can also be achieving new rankings and displacing your site. This brings us to our 5th and final point…

5. Your Own SEO and Link Development Campaign – Your own link development and SEO campaign should be thorough, covering all the aspects of a well optimized site and utilizing all your resources for obtaining incoming links. If your SEO campaign isn’t approached properly, your competitors can surpass you in the rankings easily. You must be aware of your competition and adjust your efforts accordingly.

6. if it was easy, everybody would be doing it. Getting a company’s name and products, or services, onto the first page of a genuine Google search isn’t a trivial piece of work. In fact, there are four distinct skills that a search engine optimizer needs to possess. Most people possess one or maybe two of these skills, very rarely do people posses all four. In truth, to get to all four, people who are good at two of these need to actively develop the other skills. Now, if you are running your own business, do you really have the time to do this? Is this the best use of your time?

7. Many website designers produce more and more eye-catching designs with animations and clever rollover buttons hoping to entice the people onto their sites. This is the first big mistake; using designs like these will actually decrease your chances of a high Google rating. Yes, that’s right; all that money you have paid for the website design could be wasted because no-one will ever find your site.

8. The reason for this is that before you get people to your site you need to get the spiderbots to like your site. Spiderbots are pieces of software used by the search engine companies to trawl the Internet looking at all the websites, and then having reviewed the sites, they use complex algorithms to rank the sites. Some of the complex techniques used by web designers cannot be trawled by spiderbots. They come to your site, look at the HTML code and exit stage right, without even bothering to rank your site. So, you will not be found on any meaningful search.

9. I am amazed how many times I look at websites and I immediately know they are a waste of money. The trouble is that both the web designers and the company that paid the money really do not want to know this. In fact, I have stopped playing the messenger of bad news (too many shootings!); I now work round the problem. So, optimizing a website to be Google friendly is often a compromise between a visually attractive site and an easy to find site.

As you can see, there are many, many things that make your site unique in the services it requires. Some sites can reach top page placement by just changing a title tag, while others wait 6 months to even be listed on Google. The bottom line is, educate yourself, ask questions, choose the right SEO company and be patient. In time, your top page placement will come.
