SEO Basics – Starting With Search Engine Optimization Basics

by Bruce Clay, Inc

SEO basics start with the composition of the words on your pages and what intrinsic value they offer your audience. The first prerequisite of SEO is understanding the basic correlation of content composition and the impact that content has on rankings respecitively.

Relevance is the underlying criteria that search engines reward, if your content is specific, informative and manages to acquire click through traffic, then your pages have the trappings of becoming popular which is a component to acquiring a top 10 ranking.

Aside from the title tag, (the main tag you use to describe the content of the page) and the links that endorse your content through back links (links from other sites)and the copy (which is completely under your control). There are fundamental guidelines you can adhere to that will assist you in keeping your content on topic to elevate topical relevance.

What are Search Engines?

Search engines are a cataloging system that are essentially transparent in their composition. Search engines are expected to glean information and organize data from thousands of unique industries, compile that data and then, based on the fetch command you issue as a result of you entering a boolean query in the search box are then expected to retrieve the most relevant result.

Understanding the premise of how search engines function rather than struggling to adapt and muscle your way up the SERPs (search engine result pages) is far easier instead.

Through appeasing the laws of their construction (the mathematical algorithm, teamed up with it’s ability to gain contextual artificial intelligence like phrase rank algorithm, search engines have the ability interpret the context of your pages.

Your focal point is simply to provide the ideal (relevant) result according to their ranking criteria. Which falls into three categories.

These three measuring sticks search engines use to assess content in addition to semantic synonyms and related phrases are called allinanchor, allintitle and allintext.

Talk about green widgets enough on your page, they know your page is about green widgets (allintext), placing it in the title is also a great way to signal the plane (allintitle) or get enough links from other pages that say your site is about green widgets and even if it is or not, it can potentially rank for that or related phrases (allinanchor).

That in a nutshell is how SEO basics play out according the the search engine spiders (the little programs that scour the web looking for new or exciting information to report back to the index).

The next part of SEO basics will cover how to ensure that your content is spider friendly or how to invite search engine spiders to skim, index and rank your content.

In closing, the gist is (1) make your titles unique (2) keep your writing style focused and use key words (words containing the phrases you want to rank for) as well as develop as many on topic links from other sites to cement your position in the search engine result pages.

Just writing about it on your site is not enough, unless you sites has hundreds of thousands of strong links pointing at in, in which case it can rank on the title tag alone. That is called website authority and is yet another topic we will be covering in the future.

The most relevant search result is the one that makes it to the top 10. There are no secrets involved, just logical relevance, but popularity counts so don’t just write dry content.

The whole exercise of SEO is to get traffic from people. Since people pay the bills and not spiders, make sure you have something worth saying and they will take notice and pass it along.

Otherwise, you are only helping your competition by leaving your guests hungry or thirsty for more topical information about your subject. In which case, they will simply return to the search engine and click the next result in the list. So, the bottom line is user engagement aside from topical relevance and traffic.

Writing Articles That Webmasters Love – Powerful Strategies For Successful Article Marketing

You are familiar with the mantra of “Content and Links”. You are excited and are very enthusiastic about marketing your articles. So many thoughts are running through your mind. What to write about? How can I be sure that Webmasters will pick up my article? Questions, Questions and Questions.

Look no further. Here are a few proven tips that get you started on the right track.

What does a publisher look for, in your article?

First and foremost, think for a moment that you are a Webmaster, browsing through the article directories. Which are the articles that you are most likely to pick and publish on your site? My answer would be, a good, well-written article that enriches the content of my website, that addresses a unique topic that’s useful to my regular readers and I would love if it is written with SEO in view such that my website draws traffic from search engines. Webmasters are your customers and their wish is your command, so to say.

Fill the Need – Spot an Opportunity:

Matt Cutts, who is currently running a video series on his blog and writes occasionally, has written an entry exclusively about writing useful articles. His advice is to fill a need with your article. (Very powerful suggestion after all SEO is all about content). And anytime you look for information on the web and could not find it, that should be registered an opportunity, according to Matt. He gives his “Changing the default printer for Firefox on Linux?” blog entry as an example.

His advice is to look for small niches that have no relevant content yet on the web. The added advantage here is that, SEO is relatively easy. Look at the title of Matt’s changing printer article and that tells you what keywords to intelligently use in your article. (If you are a user who needs this changing printer stuff, what would be your search phrases? That’s the key to a good article with SEO that webmasters love.)

In essence, as some SEO expert summarized, hard to find answers are the best marketed articles. Think about it. Your articles should enrich the web in general by making things easily accessible. It does not hurt to re-iterate the Mantra: SEO is about Content and Links!!

Fresh View Point – Have something new to offer

If the topic of choice for your article is a popular one, a hot topic that every one is talking about, be sure to address the issue from a totally different viewpoint. It could perhaps be a little controversial. This after all is the key to success in media business and article marketing is in the same genre. Imagine threads on various forums getting dedicated just to discuss your controversial view.

Pay attention to your Titles – Keywords in Titles

It is an established fact that publishers use your articles mostly to get traffic from search engines. Title plays a key role in this. Pack your title with relevant but most commonly searched terms. Your title tells your reader why they should read your article. Think about it. Sprinkle relevant keywords in your article. But, take care not to over do it.

Know your customers

Keep track of the websites that are publishing your articles. Alerting them of your new articles might be a good option. Perhaps you can even go one step ahead and ask them for subjects that they would like you to write about.

In summary:

1. Your articles should enrich the content of your publishers. Look for small niches that are yet to be addressed. Every failed search is an opportunity to tap into. Start small with these niches and slowly expand into related areas. Establish yourself as an expert. Article Marketing is a powerful way to build credibility.

2. If yours is a hot topic, it does not hurt to take a fresh yet controversial stance.

3. Write the article keeping SEO in view. Pay attention to Titles.

4. Know and keep track of your publishers. Direct contact with them can give you new areas to write articles about.

Article marketing is viral and if your article is good enough, it can go a long way and surprise you, the author, in many ways.

Get going and prosper!!

How Can Selecting an SEO Partner?

Every company offering SEO related services promises results but few deliver on that promise. To be the exception when it comes to delivering on that promise a SEO partner must take an approach that ensures quality results that meet YOUR business objectives.

Here’s what to look for:

First, they should demonstrate that they understand your business need.

Just giving you a questionnaire is not enough. At the beginning of any engagement, they should take the time to understand your business objectives. Your business is unique and a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach rarely actually fits every business. By taking the time to understand your business they should be able to tailor their services to best meet your business objectives as well as your budget.

Second, they should use a proven model of optimization that offers ‘realistic’ expectations.

Ignore marketing hype like “Rank #1 in Google in 24 hours” Search engines do not make public the process or rules they use to crawl, rank pages or index website pages. Further the processes and rules change often as the search engines attempt to increase the value of search results. Of course if your keyword phrase is “one of a kind white unicorns hand made by a grandmother in Peoria” then you actually have a good shot of # 1 ranking if anyone actually ever searched for that. Otherwise, it takes time and lots of work to get high rankings.

To compensate for this lack of public information, an SEO partner should rely on a proven model to ‘uncover’ the rules.

1. Analyze – Determine where your pages rank today. From this you can learn what may be ‘right’ about these higher ranking that can be applied to other pages.

2. Target – Every web site is unique. Rather than a set of ‘canned’ optimization recommendations they should determine the right optimization options for your website. To accomplish this they should use a range of methods:
• Expert Review. While many SEO partners have great in-house experience they should also turn to other experts who study search engines to determine the most likely ‘rules’ used to determine how pages are indexed and ranked.
• Best Practices. They should look at the top ranking competitors in your space to determine how they optimized their pages, for more details visit to www.the20seotools.com particularly those aspects that could influence page rankings.
• Learn as they Optimize. They should consider implementing changes to larger sites in stages. Start by optimizing your highest value pages first, then, based on the results modify the optimization approach if needed before continuing.
• It’s More than Google. While organic search results are a key portion of any optimization effort, they should know that it takes much more to get quality traffic to your website. They should be able to help you go beyond the search engines to find your new traffic.

3. Optimize – They should be able to provide the detailed information you need to understand what needs to be done to your website. They should also be willing to let you make the changes rather than forcing you to allow them to make the changes at substantial per hour fees.

4. Analyze – SEO is not a one-time effort. Your business changes, your competitors change, your prospects and customers change and the search engines refine rules. This means you will need to periodically review your ranking and re-optimize your site. You should expect your SEO partner to provide ‘follow-ups’ to ensure that you got results.

Third, their approach should be comprehensive and include all the aspects that bring traffic to your website, not just search engines. Make sure they will provide

• Detailed Site Analysis – You need to understand from where your site is starting.
• Keyword Analysis – All keywords are not created equal. They should help you understand which ones to use, and as importantly, which ones not to use.
• Page Structure Recommendations – Content, headers, keyword placement, it all matters.
• Engine Submissions – Each engine is unique. ‘Submit a link’ programs are not effective.
• Paid Search – The internet is like any business, for more details visit to www.sitemap-makers.com sometimes ‘free’ isn’t worth even that.
• Reciprocal Links – As with keywords, all links are not created equally.

Selecting a SEO partner can be intimidating. With all the marketing hype, it is easy to get fooled. In the end SEO is like any other business service you use. You should be able to understand the benefits, and limitations, it offers and make an informed decision about how to invest your money.

Is that web creator Wix.com really SEO friendly?

Ok, so we do web design, but we’re used to working in HTML, CSS, C++, JavaScript, etc.

We had a client contact us asking if they had already purchased their bandwidth, storage, and domain name from a site, if we could set it up for them. We agreed. (Saves us time)…

well it turns out it was wix.com where they purchased bandwidth, storage, and then a separate domain name hosted through a site they recommended.

Here is the thing. We don’t like using strictly flash based programs like wix.com. We signed up for the forum and found out several things were NOT available for use (HTML embedding, shopping cart that was actually usable, etc). We also found out wix.com is still in BETA version. (Nice to know now!)

Well it claim’s its SEO friendly. Our client asked us a few weeks ago why it wasn’t registering on google.com, yahoo.com or other search engines. We tried our hardest to get it to come up (Pardon me if I sound uneducated..my BF does most of the web design, I just help with what looks good & where)

It claims the free pages are SEO friendly. Well we tried to make our own free page to see how long it would take to show up. NEVER DID.

My BF asked their support team why it wasn’t showing up and we found a question that said it would take 10-15 days for google to pick up the site….(I’ve personally read it can take up to 6 months for a new site…)

This site has been up for MONTHS now, had plenty of searches and will still not come up. I’ve read that Flash made sites are VERY HARD for google and other search engines to pick up on. Is that true?

We found out through the "Ceo" of the company that wix uses a big SWF file for their main site (the actual place you sign up make your site etc.) then everyone’s individual site is ONE xml file. So bascially they have one SWF file running a million or so XML files.

Will this show up or should my client try to get his money back from them?

did you try using the 10 tags wix gives you under settings?

btw i’m also considering using wix to make a website for a small company but they don’t want to be limited to only having 10 tags so i’m trying to figure out if theres some way to get around that or if i should just dump wix. (my question –> http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090816085645AAfZVFf) would you know anything about this matter?

SEO – How To Optimize Your Site Navigation

Discussions of the techniques that can be used to search engine optimize your site navigation so you can make more money from programs like Google Adsense.

Sometimes you have optimized your website with high-paying keywords (for a program like Google Adsense) but you can’t seem to get any one to visit them. What is the problem? When nobody seems to be visiting your site it’s big bad news as it means that you will not be making any money from your pay-per-click programs. Optimizing your site navigation is all about enabling visitors to move about your site. The more your web site visitors have the opportunity to click on something that interests them on your site the more of a chance you have of making money off of them.

The best way to increase your earnings is to somehow get your readers off of your lower earning pages and onto your higher earning pages. Writing persuasive ad copy and providing a link on each of your website pages to your highest earning page is a sure way to get them to move to where you want them to go so you can make some Google Adsense earnings. Copy that convinces people to click on these links include words such as “free” or “limited time offer.” Studies have also shown that people respond to the words “free download.”

Perhaps the hardest part of this is to come up with a phrase that makes them want to click on your website. This involves using your ingenuity. It is also not necessarily one of the most intellectual of exercises. One of the most successful catch phrases used to get people to click on the Internet was the Fart Button. The caption was “Click to hear this fart. You know you want to.” If something like that works to get a website droves of business then you might have a better chance of finding a buzz phrase that makes you click by consulting your twelve year old kid rather than a professional advertising copywriter.
